His interests include the ocean's role in the global freshwater cycle, mixing and transport by ocean eddies, and the influence of ocean eddies on the oceanic surface variability.

The exchange of heat and freshwater between the atmosphere and land surface results in unique rainfall patterns at different degrees of latitude. In this video, Julius Busecke explains how these rainfall patterns create tropical and desert regions. He also points out that the same processes creating deserts and tropical regions on land happen simultaneously over the ocean, creating areas of highly saline water and areas of relatively low saline water.
