Introduction to the SPURS Moorings

Dr. Bingham received his Ph.D. from the University of California, San Diego in Oceanography. His research interests include global distributions of sea surface salinity and large scale regional physical oceanography in the Kuroshio, the western North and Equatorial Pacific, and Onslow Bay, North Carolina.

During the SPURS (Salinity Processes in the Upper Ocean Regional Study) research cruise in 2012, three moorings were deployed: a Flux Mooring, developed by scientists at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and two Prawler Moorings, put out by the Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory. Unlike floats, gliders, and drifters, these moorings are anchored to a fixed point on the seafloor and collect a multitude of information from that are of the ocean. These three moorings collected data in the SPURS region, an area in the northern mid-Atlantic, home to the worlds' saltiest seas.
